This is a VERY cool device..!! Any of you looking to do SO2R, or to just have a single interface capable of handling two radios should consider this device.
..
As mentioned in the SO2R blog entry a few days ago, this unit, commonly called the MK2R+ contains two Sound Cards, and all the audio and switching infrastructure to handle two radios while also receiving and relaying radio data (frequency, mode, etc) to the computer for the logging program. The magic of all this is that the MK2R+ uses a SINGLE USB PORT to your computer, so you don’t have to fiddle with 2 external sound cards, plus numerous USB-to-Serial adapters in order to talk with each of the radios, the rotator, antenna switches, etc… Everything is contained in a single box – plus the MK2R+ also talks (seamlessly) to the MicroHam Station Master, as well as the Station Master Deluxe which will be released soon.
..
Okay – many top SO2R operators use this device to handle the route audio and switching chores for their contest stations – granted. But I’m going to use it for routine, day-to-day operating as well as contesting. The Big-Guns often have 2 radios, but as many as 10 antennas, constantly (auto) switching antennas between the two radios, as well as bandpass-filter and various other gadgets. My set-up is much simpler – as are most of the folks out there who might join an occasional contest, so I will mostly use the audio switching functions of the MK2R+ as well as the built-in sound-cards for CW, RTTY and PSK.
..
Set-up of the MK2R+ is very easy – well, sort of.. The hardware set-up is made simple due to the fact that two pre-built radio cables come WITH the unit. You select the radios that you want to interface – and cables are available for almost all of the major brands and models. In my case, we specified a cable for each of the Elecraft K2 and K3 – with specific connectors for the Rear Panel of the K3, so that all the cables would be out-of-the way and not facing the operator. The cable sets are beautifully constructed – very professional and each cable is labeled as to function and corresponding connection point on the respective radio – simplicity itself.
..
The software setup is a bit more complex – and more time consuming. It’s worth-while to read the manual TWICE even before receiving the hardware – and again with the hardware connected. There is a piece of software call the uRouter (microRouter) that is the brains connecting the single USB interface to all of the functions contained in the MK2R+, as it emulates all of the serial ports that would otherwise be connected to a computer – such as 2 serial ports for the two radios, 2 serial ports for the radio CW keying lines, etc.. on last count, the uRouter software was emulating over 9 serial ports into the USB connection and doing a flawless job of it (on top of talking to both of the MK2R+ sound card interfaces). This is a very complex piece of software, but it simplifies SO2R by an order of magnitude or more – not to speak of making a VERY CLEAN looking station (no wires all over the place).
..
Computer software that takes advantage of SO2R and the MK2R+ specifically includes all of the popular contest software like N1MM, TR, WriteLog, CT and NA amongst others. I’m only starting to get familiar with the WriteLog piece, but initial impression is that it’s very slick indeed..!!
Cost for the MK2R+ is right at $995(price increase in the last 30 days) and it ships from the US Distributor direction in Geneva, Florida. Two radio cable sets are included and extras are $75 for any model radio. Sure, the set-up sounds steep, but when you consider that it includes 2 sound cards ($99 each for the SignaLink), 2 cable sets ($75 each), no need for 2 USB-to-Serial adapters ($35 each), you’ve saved $450 in other costs right there, so that makes the MK2R+ about $550 for the audio switching capability and other essentials to make SO2R work seamlessly.. pretty effective given that it cleans-up the radio table of all the separate units, wall warts, cables and miscellaneous “junk”…. I’m sold..!!
Eddie wanted to convey to all that he has a late work commitment for him. Unless there are others willing to host the Net, it will be CANCELLED for tonight. Attendance appears to be waning and there is consideration that perhaps interest in the net is also fading – if so, he will consider canceling the net altogether. Please send any comments – for, or against continuing for all to see, or email Eddie privately at KJ4LRB@ARRL.NET
In Mt. Dora – don’t miss it, as this should be the best Academy to date. We have invited a number of the Emergency Managers in the immediate region to participate in an ID-1 Network demonstration. This will be a first, since we’re planning on networking over 8 ID-1 units together to create a Wide-Area-Network (WAN) using just ID-1′s.
.
Registration at the door is $45.
There are three separate areas of instruction and demonstration planned for this event:
- The D-Starter session is for the newer D-Star users and will focus on the basics of programming the radios, Dongles / DVAPS, and D-Rats.
. - The ID1 demonstration session is for county emergency management, EOC, Red Cross, hospital communications, and other non-governmental officials. There will be an extensive network of ID1 high speed data/voice Radios in place to demonstrate the effectiveness of this equipment during emergency situations.
. - The SysOp session is for the more advanced D-Star users to meet with other users and have a question and answer session with the presenters as well as ICOM company officials that will be at the event. This group will also have the afternoon to work with the ID1 radios and networks that will be in place.
.
Some of the presenters who will be at the Academy are Ray Novak, N9JA of ICOM, Robin Cutshaw, AA4RC ( who will go over what’s new with Dongles and DVAPS ), John Davis, WB4ZDD and ED Woodrick, WA4YIH from Georgia D-Star ( www.dstarinfo.com ), Bob Jones, N6USP from North Brevard ARC, Paul Eakin, KJ4G, Donna Barker, WQ4M, Mike Lee,WB6RTH ( with his communications van ), and more.
.
There will be several communications vehicles set up in the parking lot that will be part of the ID1 demonstrations you can go through. Ray Novak is bringing his “ refrigerator” with all the ICOM D-Star equipment and we are planning to have portable repeater setups as well as go-kits available for you to examine.
.
A more detailed explanation of the D-Star Academy and what is planned is on line atwww.cfldsg.com . We will accept checks or cash at the door the day of the event but the price at that time will be $ 45.00 and no lunch or refreshments will be provided
Ray Novak, National Amateur Marketing Manager for ICOM America is providing an IC-80 AD and the HM-168 GPS speaker microphone for our GRAND PRIZE.

Announcements:
Eddie announced the need for net control stations as well as the new rag chew net on Tuesday nights at 2100 hrs on REF 34C.
Training:
Report submitted by Eddie Cail (KJ4LRB)
A number of folks have suggested a net for Training and Rag-Chew regarding DSTAR and related topics like D-RATS. Since there are a number of questions out there regarding linking and other subjects, we thought the suggestion was a good idea.
.
So, at least initially, we’re thinking of having the Net on TUESDAYS at 21:00 eastern on REF034C, so none of the NEFL D-Star repeaters will need to be relinked to another reflector. Structure of the Net will be quite informal, generally adhering to the following script :
- Check-ins, using the Quick-Key method – starting with NEFL stations, then proceeding to non-NEFL areas
- Stations checking-in should state whether they have an announcement, or question to Net Control
- Net Control will record those stations who have questions, so that we can address them together after checkins
- After check-ins, Net Control will re-address those stations that have a question.
- Any stations who have authoritative answers can quick-key to get recognized by Net Control.
- We’ll go for 60 minutes, or until all questions are answered – which ever comes first.
- We’ll try to record each session so that we can post the questions and answers on the blog, so that all who didn’t attend can still benefit from the session.
Feel free to suggest alternatives to the above format – we’re still in the planning stages as to how it should be run – so bear with us as we might make changes as we go.
Eddie (KJ4LRB) will be the first NetControl station, starting on July 5th. If you’d like to be on the NetControl sequence, please leave a comment and we’ll contact you.
Operation Communicate Freedom will commence at 09:00 on Thursday, 30-June-2011. A number of wide-area repeaters will be used to enable communication across the 13-county area that is supporting the Region-3 exercise. To date, Fire/Rescue units from each of the counties, DOT, Flagler Hospital, FDLE, DOF, FEMORS, FBI, the Red Cross, Media and Amateur Radio have confirmed participation.
.
Amateur Radio (specifically ARES) was specifically written into the plan and we are expecting that there will be a number of tasks that will be assigned exclusively to our three teams, which test the capabilities of Amateur Radio to communicate when all other systems fail. As the ARRL’s slogan goes, ”When All Else Fails”.
.
There will be three teams deployed to Camp Blanding, starting Wednesday 29-June-2011 – to support three separate “Incident Sites”, that will be simulating numerous disasters within the Region 3 area. Nobody knows the exact scenario, since that will not be revealed until Thursday (and progressively during the day, not all at once). We anticipate that multiple frequencies (bands) and multiple modes will be employed – not just FM Analog and HF which are traditional for most amateurs – but also Packet, Winlink2K, DSTAR and other modes (including SatPhone, which is also supported on EMCOMM-1).
.
This is an opportunity for Amateur Radio to shine – our capabilities are numerous and our teams are highly motivated. But there are a couple of reminders that might be warranted, namely :
- The entire operation (including Amateur Radio) will be operated under the Incident Command System – using ICS procedures, chain-of-command and ICS forms.
. - Everything needs to be documented – every communication (on an ICS-213), every communications plan (ICS-205), every communications capability (ICS-217A), etc..
. - We MUST work as a team – and integrate ourselves into the ICS structure. No room here for lone-rangers or cowboys.
. - BE CAREFUL what you say on the repeaters – there will potentially be observers and evaluators (including Media) listening to all of our frequencies (they have our ICS-205, so they know our entire communications plan).
. - Make sure that you IDENTIFY, as required – but DO NOT over-identify (it’s very annoying). No need to say your call 3 times in a single transmission, or even on EVERY transmission. Once every 10 minutes or at the end of an EXCHANGE is sufficient.
. - All traffic supporting the exercise should have the following preamble - “This is an Exercise …….” and end with “.. This is an exercise”
. - All Real-World Traffic of a Priority or Emergency nature should have the following preamble “.. This is a REAL-WORLD EMERGENCY”.
. - If exercise traffic is in progress and you have a real-world emergency, using the following protocol at the break between two stations “.. BREAK, EMERGENCY” – all stations should relinquish the frequency immediately to support the real-world emergency.
.
My thanks to our Planning Chief, Doug (N4FPS) who put together the entire Communications Plan, including all of the coordination with the 13 counties’ Amateurs – no small job to be sure (nor short on frustrations). Doug created an outstanding ICS package that will truly impress the Exercise Organizers – using a lifetime of skills and experience gained from being an executive with the Florida Park Service.
.
To all of you participating in this exercise – thank you for your sacrifice of time and your upcoming service. Let’s show the planners, observers and media what we’re capable of - and stun them all with our professionalism. Be safe during the exercise – don’t take unnecessary risks. If you have any questions regarding the event, feel free to contact Doug (N4FPS), Ron (WB4GHU) or myself via any means possible.
Starting at about 08:30 on THURSDAY of this week, and continuing until approximately 17:00, all NEFL D-Star repeaters and REF034C will be allocated in support of the Operation Communicate Freedom exercise, which involved 13 counties in the NEFL area. DSTAR will be used as one (not the ONLY) channel for communications between Camp Blanding and the EOC sites that currently have DSTAR.
.
Traffic between Camp Blanding Control (operating out of EMCOMM-1 at Camp Blanding) and EOCs will actually occur on multiple VHF and HF frequencies, but the ONLY facility that has Handheld coverage to multiple counties is DSTAR – including to State EOC if they were monitoring the exercise (which is NOT the case in this exercise). The importance of being able to operate in the Camp Blanding environment with multi-county coverage cannot be overstated, since Blanding is the Backup EOC for the State (in case Tallahassee is crippled).
.
All are welcome to listen to the traffic on REF034C, and any PRIORITY or EMERGENCY Traffic will always take precedent on any of the DSTAR systems during the exercise. If you do have priority or emergency traffic and exercise traffic is in progress, please simply interrupt with the phrase “Break – Priority”, or “Break-Emergency” and Net Control will relinquish the frequency at the earliest possible moment..
.
This is the first multi-county exercise involving ARES and the regional inter-coordination agency in recent memory. We have a great plan, thanks to Planning Chief Doug (N4FPS) and we expect to make a good showing at the event.
Our Logistics Master (Doug – N4FPS) just finished the planning documents for the Operation Communicate Freedom Exercise to be held on June 30, 2011.
A total of 35 operators will be participating – a very good turn-out for such a short-notice event.
.
Following are the two documents that our participants will need, namely the ICS-205 (Incident Communications Plan) and the ICS-211 or Deployment Roster and Check-in Sheet).
.
Many non-ARES operators may not be familiar with the ICS documents, but they are REQUIRED (not optional) when we are supporting governmental agencies in ANY capacity, per the requirements of FEMA as well as the State. Amateur operators are required to have completed ICS-100/700, with many agencies requiring 200/800 in order to be considered “deployable”, since FEMA will only recognize volunteers and staff with these minimum qualifications.
.
While there is a lot of passionate discussion on both sides of the ICS issue – the fact is that Amateur radio efforts in DIRECT support of City, County, or State agencies is generally NOT permitted without complying with ICS requirements and operating within the overall ICS command structure. When deployed, all of our operators report to the Incident Commander.
Following are the ICS-205 and ICS-211 (equivalent). This information, while not confidential, is only to be used to further the objectives of the exercise. Any who wish to use the forms for team education are welcome to do so.

Florida Hurricane NetControl
Jun 23
A number of people have asked me what it takes to be a DSTAR NetControl station for the Florida Hurricane Net. Having heard that question a couple of times, Bob (N6USP) put together a good write-up that will be useful for all – so I wanted to share it with all who might be considering being a NetControl station – either on a scheduled basis, or when needed during an actual emergency. Following is Bob’s write-up :
……
Hi Gary, it is easy to run the net using the dongle.
Use the history tab to log all the checkins, then start at the top and go down by calling everybody with callsign, name, location, and any comment for the net. Check the dupes box so only the first time they key up is black, all the rest is grayed out.
Keep your history list short by clearing the list before calling more checkins.
This works good and is easy and fast. When you read the script, don’t read as if your are reading it from a paper, emphasize your words as if you are conducting the net off the top of your head. Throw a little humor once in a while.
The script is attached.
Email me if you have any more questions.
